No Love For Nickleback

You might have heard that the DC metro area is getting a bit of a snowstorm this weekend–I believe what they are actually calling it is “Snowpocalypse.” The beautiful thing about being stuck in your house is that you get to curl up on the couch in your PJ’s and watch a little TV. Of course my favorite channels to watch are the music channels. When I was in high school TRL was hugely popular–this was back during the Carson Daly days. Every afternoon everyone tuned in to watch the hottest music videos. Now days, you turn on MTV or VH1 and there isn’t a single music video to be found! Instead you have shows like Rock of Love with Bret Michaels, Flavor of Love with Flavor Flave, For the Love of Ray J, A Shot of Love with Tila Tequila and I Love New York–notice a trend? The scary thing is only two of those shows actually have musicians starring in them–yes, I know that Ray J is technically a musician but let’s be honest, do you own his music? Neither do I. In fact, the only thing I know about Ray J was that he dated socialite Kim Kardashian for awhile, and quite frankly, I’m ashamed that I know that much. Anyway, I digress. I left out all of the classic shows like Real World–anyone know what number they are on now? 1000 maybe?–The Hills, Celebrity Fit Club, 16 and Pregnant, Surreal Life, Celebrity Rehab, and the newest little gem that everyone is talking about, Jersey Shore–which I honestly have yet to watch and absolutely no desire to do so in the near future.

So back to my snowy day. Imagine my surprise when I flipped on the tube and saw that VH1 STILL has a top 20 countdown! I was shocked! I thought the music stations gave up on music a long time ago! Granted, said countdown is being played at 8:00 AM on a Saturday morning when no one is awake to watch it–officially putting music videos into the same category as infomercials–but it was on and I was thrilled!

No surprises on this morning’s countdown. Ke$ha was there in all of her psycho valley girl glory, as well almost every artist to ever appear on American Idol, which begs the question, who in the world is voting for these people? Adam Lambert, Kris Allen, Daughtry, really? I think that I may be dying a little on the inside. These guys were listed in the top 5, leaving much better
artists like Michael Buble, Jay Z, Taylor Swift, Kings of Leon, and Carrie Underwood towards the bottom of the list–Yes I know Carrie was technically on American Idol too, but I like her and I’m willing to pretend that stage of her life never happened.

By the way, I LOVE the new Michael Buble single Just Haven’t Met You Yet. Even though it sounds like the “grown up” equivalent of any of the songs Zac Efron sang in the High School Musical franchise, I seriously recommend it. In fact, you might as well check out all of Michael Buble’s stuff. His music is great, it can make anyone go from grumpy to happy in 2 minutes.

Okay, so my biggest disappointment of the morning was that Nickleback was on the countdown. I honestly cannot stand their music. I’ve TRIED to like them. They are everywhere. Somewhere out there are people that keep buying their albums and voting for them on VH1 and every other countdown because they are still EVERYWHERE! Try as I might, why do I still dislike them? I think after all of this time I’ve narrowed it down…wait for it…Chad Kroeger’s voice! It’s this unusual combination of gruff and manly mixed with a whole lot of whining! He sounds like he is whining about something in every song. I’m really sorry Nickleback fans, I tried, and I just can’t do it!

So the songs I deemed worthy of this morning’s countdown are: Bad Romance by Lady GaGa, Fifteen by Taylor Swift, Just Haven’t Met You Yet by Michael Buble, Hey Soul Sister by Train, Cowboy Cassanova by Carrie Underwood, Sex on Fire by Kings of Leon, and Empire State of Mind by Jay-Z.

Hopefully I’ll be awake early enough to catch another one of these countdowns in the future!
