Day #4: A Song That Makes You Sad

I am a music teacher. I have been teaching music in urban schools for almost five years now. Working in the urban school setting is not always easy but it was something that I always wanted to do. I’ll give the credit for that to both Hollywood and my dad. I have fond memories of watching the movie To Sir With Love with my dad growing up. If you haven’t seen it I highly recommend it. It really is a great movie, but the most moving part of the whole thing is when one of Sir’s students sings the title track to him at the end. Seriously, it gets me. Every time.

When they performed the song–originally performed by Lulu–on Glee last year I balled like a baby. And then I found myself rewinding and re-watching it over and over again until the remote control had to be taken away by my concerned husband. Anyway, this was an easy song to choose, however I felt like I needed to explain it a bit. The song doesn’t make me sad in the sense that it makes me depressed, it just resonates deep within making you realize how important teachers are to their students and what a powerful impact they have on their lives. It makes me sad to think that some people are completely unaware of their impact–including some teachers–and it also makes me sad to think about how it will feel when and if I ever move on to pursue other things. Long story short, this song is one of the only songs that can move me to tears so I felt like it deserved a spot in the 30 day challenge.
